What Is Beech Leaf Disease?
Beech Leaf Disease is associated with the foliar nematode Litylenchus crenatae subsp. mccannii. The disease disrupts normal leaf development, reducing the tree's ability to produce energy and causing progressive decline over multiple growing seasons. Although symptoms often begin in the canopy, Beech Leaf Disease affects the entire tree and should be evaluated as early as possible.
Common Symptoms:
• Dark banding between leaf veins
• Thickened, leathery leaves
• Reduced leaf size • Thinning canopy
• Delayed bud break
• Progressive branch dieback
• Declining vigor over several years

Not Every Beech Tree Has Beech Leaf Disease
One of the most common mistakes is assuming every unhealthy beech tree has Beech Leaf Disease.
Other problems—including woolly beech aphids (see link to Bobby’s educational TikTok), drought stress (see picture below), nutrient deficiencies, root damage, and other environmental conditions—can produce similar symptoms.
